I'm going to rank and give a quick analysis of some of the top talents per position in this year's draft. I am going to make a new thread for each position and will keep old threads listed in each new thread.
Keep in mind, this is purely my opinions. I am not saying this will be the order, this will be how players turn out or anything along those lines, it's just simply my own personal thoughts.
If you'd like a specific position to be done next, feel free to post, I don't mind jumping around. If not, I'll go in order (QB, WR, RB, TE, OT, etc...)
If you ever notice a player not in my list, it's either because I have them at a different position and/or they have not declared yet. I am trying not to put anyone in these lists who has not declared for the draft yet.
Anyway, as always, rate, hate and critique your hearts out.Side note, I've got some real life shit going on at the moment, busy and what not so might not get these out daily but I'll try.
Offensive Tackles1) Jake Matthews, OT, Texas A&MFather is Hall of Famer Bruce Matthews, cousin is Clay Matthews (and Casey Matthews), little brother is an up and coming center so on blood line alone Matthews has a cheating head start over these other guys. OK, that aside (because lets be real, blood doesn’t mean much when it comes to talent, I won’t mention any brothers who play in the NFL at the same position…..
) Matthews is big and physical. He’s an elite pass blocker, he kept Manziel upright even when Johnny tried his fucking best to make life hell for Matthews (holding onto the ball forever, running around like an idiot, etc etc) but Matthews kept him upright. My favorite thing about Matthews is his footwork. For a big son of a bitch, he sure has quick and agile feet. His run blocking is his weakness but it’s a small weakness, he’s still good at it, just not elite. Matthews has all the potential to be a 10-15 year top end LT.
2) Greg Robinson, OT, AuburnRobinson is kind of the opposite of Matthews. He’s an elite run blocker and an above average pass blocker. Robinson can open up holes and create space for his runner and will fight the defense for every inch of space in pass protection. Not a whole lot else to say about Robinson, gritty blocker, strong, agile, elite in run blocking, could stand to improve his pass protection but he doesn’t give up.
3) Antonio Richardson, OT, TennesseeI just want to mention one thing here that shows a bit of Richardson’s talent. Dallas Thomas was a very good tackle prospect 2 years ago. Richardson showed up and Thomas got moved inside so Richardson could play LT. Now, you don’t see a team move a prospect that showed Thomas’ potential like that very often so that says something. Anyway, kind of got off topic there. Richardson faced some quality pass rushers this season and held his own, he’s very quick and agile for his size and strong. Whenever he has a down moment, he has a very short memory and bounces back quickly. Now it all sounds good but you have to keep in mind he’s not incredibly sound in his blocking and is a bit inconsistent. Don’t get me wrong, he’s very gifted but he needs to be more consistent to make it in the NFL.
4) Morgan Moses, OT, VirginiaMoses is my biggest sleeper this year. He’s got good size and athleticism. He isn’t the best blocker at the moment, but he has shown consistent improvement year to year. He’s played the majority of his career at RT but I think he has the potential to play LT in the NFL, and play it well. Straight up here, I really don’t have more on Morgan Moses, he’s a pure personal like ranking for me.
5) Taylor Lewan, OT, MichiganThis was my boner man crush for the longest time. All of last year and the majority of this year I have been high on Lewan, until recently. I’m still in fairly high praises of him but he’s definitely taken a step back in my book. He’s nothing to overlook though. He’s solid in pass and run blocking, he’s big and physical, light on his feet and can make all the blocks needed. Michigan as a whole, kind of shit the bed this year and it put some people off of Lewan. Like I said, he showed me some stuff I wasn’t pleased with but he made Clowney look foolish last year and he held up well this entire year. Take it for what you want, I still like the guy, just not quite as high on him anymore but he’s still worthy of a first round selection.
6) Cyrus Kouandjio, OT, AlabamaKouandjio is a lot like Antonio Richardson in the sense that Alabama took a top level talent like Barret Jones and moved him from left tackle to center so Kouandjio could play LT. Kouandjio is inconsistent but has a lot of potential. He’s a good athlete with good size but has plenty of room to grow. He held his own against some top competition in college but also got abused by a few guys too.
7) JuWaun James, OT, TennesseeJames is another guy I’m super high on. He was rock solid his entire collegiate career and is reliable in both the run and pass game. He held his own against Clowney, not allowing a sack the entire game (all though he did have help for some of that game, not all of it, but some). James is being looked at as either a right tackle or guard in the NFL but I fully believe he could emerge as a very solid left tackler.
8) James Hurst, OT, North CarolinaHurst had a solid year and was rising up draft boards. He did well against speed rushers, showed power (but he really needs to add strength for the NFL) and was very precise in his pass protection. Unfortunately for Hurst, he broke his leg in UNC’s bowl game so he won’t be able to play in the Senior Bowl or participate in the combine which really sucks. He’ll probably fall to late day 2 now, possibly even day 3, we’ll see. If that’s the case though, someone is going to get a steal.
9) Zack Martin, G/OT, Notre DameMartin is a guard in the NFL but can play right tackle probably. I like him a lot as a guard, not quite as high on him as a tackle (so that’s why he’s at this point in the rankings for tackle). Anyway, Martin showed good blocking against both speed and power guys. He’s not as strong as you’d like him to be though so he needs to bulk up a bit. All in all though, aside from being a bit small, there’s not much to say about Martin, he’s solid in pass protection, opens up lanes for the run game and is reliable.
10) David Yankey, G/OT, StanfordYankey falls into the same category as Martin, he’s really a guard in the NFL but he can play right tackle if needed. He’s definitely above average in both run and pass blocking but he’s not elite in either. He could stand to bulk up some and work on his foot work a bit but all in all, Yankey could turn into at worst a very solid and reliable guard.
11) Jack Mewhort, OT, Ohio StateMewhort has a lot of potential. He’s still raw and there are holes in his game but his biggest concern is that he’s 6’7’’, 308 lbs. He may as well be anorexic and that height and weight lol. If this kid can bulk up, watch out because he’ll be a force to be reckoned with. I don’t think he could play LT but he can be a dominate guard or right tackle.
12) Joe Bitonio, OT/G, NevadaI’m fairly fresh on Bitonio but from what I’ve seen he’s an above average run blocker, creating lanes and opening holes for his runners but he’s only an average pass blocker. He is strong though and pretty good on his feet. He’s going to be much better suited as a guard in the NFL though but push comes to shove and he can play RT.
13) Cameron Fleming, OT, StanfordFleming is fantastic in run blocking and still developing as a pass blocker. He was pretty good and well-rounded all year but he did struggle against some of the higher end pass rushers he faced (Anthony Barr in particular). Although he struggled, he had strong moments too against Barr so there’s plenty of good and bad. A lot of potential for a nice late third to fifth round pick.
14) Billy Turner, OT, North Dakota StateTurner was a dominate force at his level of competition. That competition though was no way in hell anywhere near what he’ll face at the senior bowl and in the NFL. If Turner can does well at the senior bowl, there’s a good chance he sneaks into day 2 of the draft.
15) Andrew Norwell, OT/G, Ohio StateNorwell was a very reliable offensive lineman. He does a lot well but nothing spectacular. He should probably play guard but I can see right tackle being a possibility too.
16) Seantrel Henderson, OT, MiamiIf Henderson just took his head out of his ass he could be up there with Matthews and Robinson. But, he’s been inconsistent with his on the field work and consistent with his off the field work. Let’s start off the field, he’s been suspended on a few different occasions, has been injured a few times and is just constantly distracted from football. On the field he’ll look like Joe Thomas one moment and Levi Brown the next. He’s very inconsistent. He’s a hulk of a man (6’8’’, 336) though and very athletic and quick for that size. The potential, raw talent and building blocks are there, someone just needs to harness it and make this kid an elite LT.
17) Wesley Johnson, OT, VanderbiltJohnson is quite light for his height (6’5’’, 295) so he really needs to bulk up. But, he is versatile which is good for his sake. He can play center, either guard spot and right tackle in the NFL. There’s a slim chance he could play left tackle but I doubt it. I like him personally, he’s intelligent and plays to his strengths but he’ll get torn up by some of the more physical defensive linemen in the NFL.
18) Justin Britt, OT, MissouriOK seriously, did fucking everyone play Clowney this year? Every single offensive lineman I’ve looked at, the highlight shows them against South Carolina and Clowney lol. Anyway, Britt looks like he has some potential but he’s got a long way to go before he can hold up against NFL defenses. Not really a lot else to say. Good build, solid athlete but will probably be best fit moving inside to guard.
19) Cornelius Lucas, OT, Kansas StateLucas has a massive frame at 6’9’’, 328 and he uses that to his advantage. I did see him being a bit slow against some of the speed rushers he faced but he managed. Either way, he’s not a day 1 guy or even a day 2 guy but whoever takes a chance on him on Day 3 will be getting a big body that they can develop.
