I've been told they will take up to around 500 hp, I'm hoping to be in the 450-475 range once it's built.

NA?

You'd be better off hitting those numbers with boost, not that it can't be done, but it's much more effective to hit that number

Yes , z304 aluminum heads, edelbrock victor jr intake and a Holley 750
Carb. This is pretty much what I'm thinking for a build to copy.

There's just something I love about opening up a 4 barrel man, brings me back to my younger days. I'm not racing it or anything just going to be a fun car for summer.

carbs are a pain in the ass and way less efficient and harder to tune for rpm range. not that it cant be done....

i suppose it depends what your long term plan is... sounds like it might be time to think about that. if your going to stay N/A carb is fine, but spend the money and get a nice one. if you plan on adding boost to the equation, dont bother spending $ on a carb now

No I'm not planning on boosting it or anything. I don't need the baddest shit on the road, but I don't want a stock stang either. I just want to be able to put the pedal down and go like hell when necessary. If i get 350+ hp it will do what I need. I'm not taking it to the strip and racing it, I might light to light with someone or go from a roll on the highway once in a while, but just for fun you know. And I have plenty of time to think about it, it will be a winter rebuild or next summer, I dont have a roller for it yet, but I might soon. I found a nice 84 2.3 t top I'm going to go look at.

10/4 in that case, what you got with a cam and a good carb should be good to go. id do some suspension work, they make alot of nice stuff to get them things rollin good.

that being said. those newer holley xp's ive heard arte very nice, and dont break the bank. they come in bit less than 900 bucks.

Well, I'll definitely have more into the motor than I will the car. I can get a fair paint/rust free roller around here for about 2k or so. Then I'll put stabilizer bars in it and do the suspension. It's nothing money can't fix...lol I just need more of it to do it all at once!
