I'm going to rank and give a quick analysis of some of the top talents per position in this year's draft. I am going to make a new thread for each position and will keep old threads listed in each new thread.
Keep in mind, this is purely my opinions. I am not saying this will be the order, this will be how players turn out or anything along those lines, it's just simply my own personal thoughts.
If you'd like a specific position to be done next, feel free to post, I don't mind jumping around. If not, I'll go in order (QB, WR, RB, TE, OT, etc...)
Inside Linebackers:1) Kevin Minter, ILB, LSU – Minter is easily the safest pick at ILB this year. He’s big, physical and fast. He hits fast and hard, makes quick decisions and is solid in pass coverage. If I’m drafting an ILB, I want Minter because you know what you’re getting, his floor is basically where he’s at now and all he can do is get better and better.
2) Manti Te’o, ILB, Notre Dame – Even with the controversy surrounding Te’o and the questions about his maturity, he’s still one of the most talented ILB in this draft. The game against Bama showed he has room to grow but you can’t put all the blame on him, the entire ND took a massive shit in that game. He improved his pass coverage skills and has good size, speed and athleticism. He’s intelligent and instinctive but as I said, has room to improve. Te’o’s ceiling is very high but the worst you’ll get out of him is an average ILB who will be solid, but not spectacular. Medium risk, high reward prospect imo.
3) Alec Ogletree, ILB, Georgia – I like Alec Ogletree a lot but he’s had too many off the field issues now to be ahead of Te’o in my book. The failed drug tests were meh imo, he’s young and smoked some weed (I think it was weed anyway) but the DUI is too much for me. That aside, Ogletree can be a dominate ILB in the NFL. He has the size and natural ability to do it. He can cover when needed but he’s better at getting into the backfield from the position.
4) Kevin Reddick, ILB, North Carolina – Reddick is interesting at ILB. I think he’d really be better fit to move to OLB in a 3-4 defense. He’s great at getting into the backfield but he’s done so consistently from the ILB spot so we’ll see. Reddick is a poor man’s Daryl Washington who can grow and become a top notch ILB like Washington.
5) Michael Mauti, ILB, Penn State – Without the injuries, Mauti may have been able to move himself all the way to the #2 ILB in this class. He’s super talented and has the right size, speed and mechanics to play ILB in the NFL. His problem is staying healthy. He’s torn his right and left ACLs in college so it’s a major concern. If he goes to a program with a great training staff he could easily be the steal of the draft at ILB.
6) A.J. Klein, ILB, Iowa State – I’ve got a bit of a man crush on Klein. He’s not a spectacular ILB, he’s not really going to make those WOW plays, but he’s going to consistently be making plays. He’s a tackling machine, he’s not going to give an inch and he’s just a blue collar player. I’d love love LOVE to see him go to the Bears, sit behind Urlacher until he retires and then step in and dominate like Urlacher did.
7) Kiko Alonso, ILB, Oregon – Alonso has talent but he has plenty of room to improve. I don’t see him as an instant starter but he can be a solid depth guy and special teamer as he comes into his own and after a season or two of sitting behind a vet, he could be a viable option for any team.
8) Jonathan Bostic, ILB, Florida – Bostic is less than impressive but he showed signs of greatness. It’s not that he’s a bad player by any means; he just needs to develop his game for the NFL. He improved over course of last season but and showed that the talent is there, it just needs to be brought out.
9) Nico Johnson, ILB, Alabama – Johnson is a solid run stuffer but he pretty much sucks when it comes to pass protection. I’m not too knowledgeable on him overall but as a third day developmental pick, he’s solid.
10) Bruce Taylor, ILB, Virginia Tech – Taylor had a decent season and helped himself move from going undrafted to a third day developmental pick. I see the flashes of talent he has so he could be a nice little steal for someone.
11) Tom Wort, ILB, Oklahoma – Wort is just meh to me. He flashed at times but unlike Taylor and Johnson who, when they weren’t flashing, they were still viable defenders, Wort may as well have been sitting on the bench.
12) Vince Williams, ILB, Florida State – Williams is a big guy who is mobile. He’s not ready for NFL talent yet, but he can get there with some hard work and great coaching. He can play inside in a 4-3 or 3-4 but he’ll be better fit in a 4-3 imo.
13) Steve Greer, ILB, Virginia – Greer was productive and tallied up some nice numbers this past year but overall he was held very much in check against anyone he played that had talent. He is a solid player though that could be a great depth/special teamer who, when called upon, could still be a very reliable ILB.
