seems to be the same principle that results in bacteria phenomenon. the body breathes stuff out to get rid of it. but with a mask on you just breath it right back in.

I've heard of the Foegen effect, been hoping to see some more literature but it's been quiet for months since it was first brought up.
The fact that it has only been looked at in one single state during one single wave makes me suspicious of its significance, but I can't dismiss it yet and so I'm tracking it a little
