The biggest thing we can learn from American political reality is how easy it is to manipulate the American public with crap propaganda.
As the saying goes: "the devil is in the details" - it's not hard to find majority support for a vague, good-sounding policy in a poll. Finding majority support for a concrete bill which spells out all the costs and downsides, the winners and also the losers, is an entirely different story.
Regarding the examples you gave: Americans' understanding of 'reasonable' gun control or higher taxes on the 'wealthy' differs wildly. For an NRA member, "reasonable" gun control means that people should not be allowed to open carry flamethrowers or rocket launchers...
