That might be the real story out of this campaign.
Bernie in 2016 was riding a wave of populist nationalism from supporters who had seen free trade destroy their jobs and slow economic growth to a standstill. That was his big issue
Trump championed the same issues and won on them
Come 2020, the economy has recovered, Trump is leading the protectionist economic war, and Bernie instead focused his campaign on healthcare as his big issue. But he drafted in surrogates who used his momentum to make the race about their moralizing social issues, and the media was all too happy to stoke that along. We had a "9 year old transgender child" asking questions at the CNN town hall. A disorienting stream of israel-bashing and muslim-pandering, metoo, trannies, black lives matter protesters saying he's not woke
enough, etc etc. Even just yesterday we were getting headlines about how he had an Imam speak at his rally who said ISIS was an Israeli psy-op and slurred Bernie for being a Jew. If Bernie was a black man instead of a white jew, that alone would be Jeremiah Wright x1000 and sink him on its own. And that was just a drop in the bucket of this campaign.
Everything good Bernie had going for him in 2016 was already picked up by Trump, and we got left with the undesirable elements of the far-left. The Antifa and SJWs college burnouts, not the laid off factory worker.
