It seems as if his ambiguous, unconventional stances on issues like guns, trade or immigration were an important and often overlooked part of his appeal in 2016, and giving them up to appeal to SJWs was a mistake.
The tldr of his 2020 campaign is basically that he traded strength in Michigan, Maine and Minnesota for strength in California and Texas. His strategy could have worked if there had really been a huge surge in latino turnout on his behalf, but that didnt happen, so that he ended up treading water (on balance).
