The tv show does a much worse job of redeeming Jamie then the books.

I read them a long long time ago and while I like his character in both the books and the show, I just can't buy into the concept of him being the savior. It's plausible for sure and the fans would be absolutely ecstatic, seems like most people dislike Jon or think he's way too vanilla, but all the buildup and secrets piled on throughout that guide to his lineage, are too important and too many for him not to be Azor Ahai. We'll find out soon enough, but I feel like Jamie has to die after killing Cersei. We know for sure he's going to kill her and I can't see any scenario where he continues living or becomes a hero after killing the person he's loved for his entire life.

Why does he have to kill her?

Everyone seems so convinced but I can't work out why?

The prophecy.

Just watch and enjoy bud. Could be wrong, but this is one of the things I'm like 99.9999% on.

Yea, we can agree on Jaime killing Cersei being almost a sure thing

But this scenario is a requirement of the Azor Ahai prophecy (the Nissa Nissa part).

If not Jaime, then you have to believe that either Ygritte or Dany would be fulfilling the Nissa Nissa role for Jon. Both are plausible, but neither of them fit the bill as well as Cersei does for Jaime. Plus, Jon has never killed a Lannister but Jaime has.

Plenty of time for him to kill a Lannister lol. Whichever way they go, I'm going to enjoy every fucking minute of it. How amazing would it be if he managed to somehow tie everything up perfectly, but with shit that none of us saw coming. I personally think there's no chance in hell of it going down like that, but he's been on point with the "Awwww, the fuck George" moments throughout the entirety of the series.

I feel like I've missed a major plot line somewhere... or is this something from the books?

which are you referring to: The prophecy of Cersei's death or the Azor Ahai?

Do you remember a scene (can't remember the season but it was around the middle) that was a flashback to Cersei as a child when her and her friend went to see a weird lady in a hut in the woods? That lady was a fortune teller of sorts. The scene wasn't as extensive as it was in the books. It may have been cut short in the show or we may see the other half of it during this season (return flashback). Regardless, the show has been pretty much sticking to everything that the books said during that scene, so there's no reason to disbelieve that it will also stick to the 3rd prediction (which covers Cersei's death).

As for Azor Ahai, well, Melisandre mentions it now and then and you really gotta reach to put the pieces together. But however you slice it, the AA prophecy has played a central role in the show so there's no way that they just dismiss it now when it's time for it to be revealed.
