I talk to a Chinese person that lived in Shanghai all but a few years of his life everyday. Oppressed as in you can’t eat or buy whatever you want? No.

Oppressed as in your opinion doesn’t matter on how rules or decisions are made? Yes. Oppressed in the sense that they live in a surveillance state? Yes. Oppressed in the sense that they are forced in churches to take down pictures of Jesus and replace them with pictures of Xi? Yes.

I think it's more of a phase. This is really similar to the time when television first became commonplace. Now, instead... it's the internet.
There's nothing wrong with the internet, but people have to remember to STILL do their own thinking. Letting the internet do your thinking, is disastrous.


/e At least in the US (through the laws of the country), we CAN have plenty of... "voice". We just have to... NOT let ourselves be influenced by the tsunami of (possibly erroneous) information we are assailed with every day. Anyone with enough money can BUY what we see and hear via our communication tech. So we need to be wary of that, 24/7.
