How is it a shit hole exactly? I've lived here for a few years now and it seems alright to me. I can't afford a house because I need about half a million dollars for a down payment, but that's fine since I don't have children.

And all the science they produce.

And all the tech jobs they produce.

And all the educated people they produce.

There's really no other state that produces as much for the country as a whole than California. I mean, maybe New York since it has Wal Street, but in the end it's just an exchange and not where things are actually produced.

It's the food.

Cali produces 11.63% of all the food that the US produces. To the tune of 43.5 billion dollars.

Cost of living is a mjaor factor in determining if a location is a shit hole.

You can't afford a home, yet you actually make pretty good money. That means that over the general course of a lifetime, you start making the investment into a mortgage much later than most Americans. It also means less likelihood of upgrading that first home to a better one. It means more likelihood of dependency on the state. You're surrounded the the country's most infamous gang turf. Your state government is borderline retarded. The cost of living in LA is almost 20% higher than over here in Minneapolis. The traffic? Worst in the WORLD. You're surrounded by the greatest percentage of politically stupid people in the country, bar none. Tent cities. Worst business climate of all 50 states 12 years running. Worst taxation in the country. Infrastructure crumbling.

12.2% of the US population makes 11.63% of the US food? Just... wow.

The rest of the country can increase its food production by ten percent easily. There are plenty of better reasons that California is important to the United States.

God no. I spend a lot of time in Cali, and the last thing I want to see is it becoming a sovereign independent state run by hippies.

Well, if the Civil War settled anything, it's that the right to secede does not exist.
