I find that depression comes when you have no goals in life. Goals and interests.
My depression went away within a few months of just establishing a routine and a set of goals.
Lose X amount of weight
Reach X rating in chess
Compose 1 more song I'm satisfied with
Complete the documentation for a game I want to develop
Start my new Berserk tattoo sleeve
Bench/Squat/Deadlift goals
etc
At some point you'll go from "wtf am I doing with my life" to "holy shit, how do I find the time to do everything I wanna do"
Obviously there needs to be some sort of strong motivator behind all of this. No matter how selfless or selfish the motivator might be. "Look good for the bitches" vs "altruistically do your part to better the world". Doesn't fucking matter. You just need a driving force to make you want to get back on track. Could be finding a partner, becoming the best version of yourself. Anything you believe in strong enough will do.
This is true. I also think that, a common denominator with reaching your goals is discipline.
If you're the kind of person that does things or continues to do things that you sometimes don't want to do, but still do it, realizing that it's for your benefit. That will definitely separate you from others.
Initially is the worst with trying to headstart goals.
I read or heard once that people will do more to avoid pain, than they will to seek pleasure.
Meaning, a person will avoid putting themselves into an uncomfortable scenario (let's say going to the gym for the first time, socializing with new people, breaking out of old habits), even though putting themselves in those scenarios are for their benefit.
So, you avoid the temporary pain of initial uncomfortable feelings. But you don't seek the pleasure, or benefits of partaking in these events. This also may be a trade off of short-term, vs long-term benefits.
Anyways, I liked your post. Had to comment on it as well.

Edit - There's also nothing wrong with changing goals. Taking breaks for other things. Or changing interests. Etc.
Not trying to bash people in regards to that. Just saying if you still want the same things, I think a person should stick with it.
