What are people's thoughts on this experimental release format (3 episodes at first, then 1 per week)? The backlash over the release format has generated a lot of discussion.
I saw one interesting perspective on it today. I'm not sure I agree, but it got me thinking:
I am starting to think that a weekly release only helps shows that are more intricate. If there is a lot of attention to detail, then it can actually enhance the experience to put each episode under a microscope. I definitely felt this way about the first 4 seasons of GoT. It was rewarding to rewatch episodes because there was more to pick up on. And since the story will fully fleshed out, it could stand up to scrutiny.
In contrast, The Witcher would have probably been hurt badly by a weekly release. I wasn't bothered by any lazy writing or inconsistencies. When I think back on the show, I mainly remember the highpoints: the ending, the porcupine knight getting unmasked AND how hot the chicks were (that Lioness chick and pre-transition Yennefer=yummy).
I'd really like to see some show try releasing 2 episodes per week. I wanna test how that feels.
I kind of disagree with that quote. I find when I binge shows I'm more likely to be like "wait a minute.. But last episode... And now..." Whereas week to week I don't care as much unless it's something pretty big.
I agree some shows benefit from being able to binge them, like the Witcher. But I think the reason for that is different. Like the Witcher does a lot of time fuckery and would have been too hard to follow for the general watcher if it was a weekly release.
I don't really care one way or the other, unless they're is benefit as stated above.
Honestly I'm fine with the boys being weekly, gives me something to look forward to in the television realm. I'm kind of getting tired of the "something good was released, watch it all, now there is literally nothing to do for 5 months until the next interesting thing is released" situation.
