I guess the point where we disagree is the implicit assumption behind that article that I linked: that the massive shift of the Democratic party to the left in recent years is unhealthy, not good and not a return to normalcy as you put it.
You're right when you point out that the Democratic party was at its most progressive and pro-big-government during the LBJ-era, and that it had moved to the right without a break from the early 70s until Obama's election in 2008.
But I think that the shift to the left under Obama should not be discarded here. A good chunk of the turf that the Democrats had given up between 1970 and 2008 was already reclaimed during Obama's tenure.
On top of that, I strongly disagree with the notion that the LBJ-era, which was when Democrats were at their most progressive of the last 70 years, should be used as the neutral point from which the political spectrum is defined.
