Regarding side drops welling, I range from 6 to 14 when I well tier VII items at level 10, tier XI items at level 20, and tier XIV items at level 40. 1-5 when welling much of anything 55+. I don't know about welling "at your own level". But I do know about welling "up". :)
1. Key Order... my old superstition before 50/50 feeder MQ came about was the ol, 33.3333333(etc) chance to pick the correct key... but, it would never be the first key or the third key... so I always start with the second key.
2. Stale game longer than 2 hours.
I can understand that concept, mine was that the monsters were easier to kill off... not sure if that is similar to your superstition, but, I have found good gear in a game killing mobs (normal) over 4 hours later... basically I went to sleep, woke up and game was still active, killed monsters and got decent drops... and yes they were easier to kill.
