The virus is far worse than the ones that came out during the Obama or Bush administrations, however Trump's handling of the situation was far worse. So it was a double whammy, only one of which he is responsible for.

This coronavirus right here is one of those ones that humans have been afraid of for decades. One that can spread without symptoms. That shit is crazy.

I think the most relevant criterion is how well Trump is doing compared to other world leaders.

China initially fucked up their response, but then got its shit together in record time.
South Korea and Japan did very well, although Japan might not be off the hook yet.

The final verdict on Europe is still pending, but Italy and Spain failed badly in their response. But France and Switzerland are also hit very heavily by the coronavirus (Switzerland's absolute numbers are tiny because the country is tiny, but per capita, they're almost as badly affected as Italy!), and their governments are generally considered well-run. Austria initially fucked up royally when they kept their alpine skiing resorts open out of pure greed and carelessness, which has helped spread the virus from Northern Italy throughout Europe, but ever since, Chancellor Kurz' handling of the crisis has been exemplary. Poland seems to be dealing with it very well so far, although their government is usually held in low regard. Sweden, the UK and the NL were very lenient and careless, we will see if they'll have to pay the price. Germany's response was ok, but a lot of the little things were messed up, and we're benefitting from a larger cushion since we have a comparatively large number of ICU beds.

Russia and Turkey are not taking the virus very serious at all, and might be on the verge of being overrun by cases in the coming weeks. Brazil's and Mexico's leadership are also displaying a shocking degree of carelessness with the virus.



So if we rate on a scale from 1 to 10, I would say that Trump's handling of the crisis was a 2/10 on an objective scale, but a 4/10 relative to the rest of the world. The policy response in the U.S. imho is a 7/10, the messaging a 1 (or even a 0)/10.


tldr: Perspective is important. If we're being honest, most of the world hasnt exactly covered itself in glory when it comes to the coronavirus response.

Because our system is designed to prevent putting capable people in charge. Appealing to the masses by lying to them on camera is what gives political power under this system. That's what needs to change.

The policy response is not exclusively on Trump, Congress and the states have also contributed to it. By contrast, the disastrous messaging was almost entirely Trump's fault.
