A lot of them actually did during the early 90s when CA was in a slump because its economy shifted away from engineering and towards IT.

The replacement of blue collar jobs with hightech ones, and hispanic immigration, have turned the state of Nixon and Reagan, which had been a bastion of Republicans throughout the 80s, into one of the most liberal states in the entire country within just 2 decades.
