I feel the same about education. Funding doesn’t result in higher grades. I.e. Zuckerberg’s Newark School $100 million grant anyone?
The Washington Post talks about a program designed to put the poor into a swanky Northwest DC apartment complex to assist in integrating them into the affluent community similarly to the intent of section eight housing. Well, it was a fucking disaster. Crime rose 400% in 2 years and it was basically turned into a ghetto. From the words of previously homeless tenants there, many there just took the freebie, abused it, and fucked it up for everyone else. Imagine that.
Call me an asshole if you want, but I just think pouring money and resources toward those who don’t want to help themselves is just a fucking waste. Every city has tons of money and existing programs for the poor and very few make a meaningful difference.
Thoughts? Defenses? Call this “just one example of anecdotal evidence?”
The poor don't need to be
given money. They need to be given employment opportunity i.e. the ability to
earn money.
Immigrants came to America with no money, not even speaking the language. What was waiting for them? Factory jobs. Jobs that let them raise a family and send their kids to school so that their kids could have a chance to earn an even better life for themselves and their kids.
You don't change people by giving them handouts. You change people by giving them a chance to change themselves. It won't work for everyone (obviously) but over time, your culture improves.
