New theory that popped up tonight:
We know that the Mad King stored a bunch of wildfire underneath King's Landing and was threatening to "burn them all" that's why Jaime had to kill him. In the present, the city faces a potential siege from White Walkers, against which those stores of wildfire could be very useful.
Perhaps the Mad King's "madness" was a result of him being periodically warged into by 3ER. 3ER's brain gets a little mushed from the time traveling. At the time Robert's rebellion is at the city walls, 3ER (inside Aerys) mistakenly thinks that he's using the wildfire to defend the city by killing the walkers.
Suiciding King's Landing to kill all the Walkers would actually be an understandable strategy if it meant the end of the war.
Welcome to the Internet since 2016.

Another theory from tonight:
The burning symbol at the end is obviously important to NK. It's the same symbol we saw the dead wildling bodies in S1E1. And it's also the symbol we see when we get the overhead shot of the Isle of Faces where NK was created.
Perhaps that island is the NK's destination. But since it's an island, the NK can not get there until the Long Winter where the river is frozen over (so he can walk since he can't swim).
