I like that my Hyper 212 X Turbo has one of its fans above the motherboard VRMs that water cooling might not have without a modification like strapping a fan on top, and it requires less maintenance and cannot leak.

i'm not sure air cooling would work for my excessively overclocked 8700k. at least not during benching or any extended high voltage use.
can't say from experience to be honest. i read from multiple sources that the 8700k runs really hot, so i went with an aio liquid unit.

i would like to build a dedicated loop though.
my VRM isn't covered at all currently. they make a monoblock for my MB that covers both cpu and vrm that i'd like.

i'm debating not bothering until next build. don't think i'll ever switch back to air though

8700k runs hot because of the shit TIM that's used in the chip (it can't transfer heat to the heat spreader for shit). If you were to delid the cpu, a D15 would probably yield lower temps than a 240mm AIO.

Are you sure it's the tim or the gap from the glue?
Hence why some delids result in small decrease in temps

that's possible perhaps, i really couldn't say as again i just don't have the experience with air on a chip OC'd over 5ghz.
i've never invested in a "great" air cooler though either.

something to note is that the 9900k's are also running extremely hot although they are soldered.

i just looked up on-line. there's a couple claims of 5ghz on air

i've seen some better lotto roles that didn't get any sort of increase after a delid as well.

holy shit i thought i posted this an hour ago

Poor delid results are from people using low-quality TIM to replace the low quality TIM. For most people running heavy overclocks, you will see 10-15 degrees C drop under load with properly applied liquid metal and adequate cooling (although at 1.45v you will defs need custom loop cooling to maintain those temps).
Linus and Bitwit both did videos about that. Linus did one where the liquid metal TIM was nearly as efficient as using a custom waterblock directly on the die (removing 1 layer of heat spreader and TiM).

you may be right. i can't remember every video i've watched, but the more popular channel that had this result was jayz2cents. i took a look back and it wasn't a liquid metal that he used.
