Oilers boss, Bob Nicholson into 2nd interviews with GM candidates. Belief is, he may do a 3rd with top guys and is hoping to hire his man around May 1.

The biggest thing was probably the lack of foresight in the shift in the NHL.
When chiarelli came in to EDM was the tail end of the pain train days. Edmonton was soft and he wanted to make them feared bc it got him a cup in Boston.
Well, the next season, a bunch of skill players pushed out all of those old school power forward types and now there's a Grandlund on every line in place of all those old dubinsky and lucics.

Chara had to transform his game and roll.
That year before chiarelli was probably the year clutterbuck, Martin, and whoever else was the third banger on that line had like the season of their lives.
Now all these heart and soul type guys are riding the bench or watching from the stands.

This is a good point.

Things changed quickly. The recipe for success shifted from the rough style coupled with excellent goaltending that Boston used to bully their way to a cup win in 2011.

La adopted a similar strategy. Physical teams backed by solid goaltending. You played an aggressive, physical game and even if you took more penalties it did not matter for those teams because they stood behind a good defensive system and strong goaltending.

This strategy choked the life out of the skilled teams and you could win by grinding the game down to a halt.

Now speed is everything. 3rd/4th line guys that could not skate have been replaced by guys who can. You now have 3rd/4th line guys that have no problem keeping up with most elite players. They don't need to rough them up behind the play or try to grind the game down as much because they are not far behind in the play.

Look at how ruthless the CBJ forwards were (including 3rd/4th line guys) against Tampa. They closed the gap super fast in the neutral zone with speed and forechecked with a ruthless tenacity. Players like Lucic, or our own overpaid Eriksson just cant play effective anymore because if you do not have the speed the game has passed by you.

A good manager will have an understanding of trends and will know that styles change. Chiareli had no foresight as you said.

Now he is stuck with boat anchor contracts.

Hall did fuck all with in the time he spent on 97’s line, not high enough hockey iq. He also partied to much , didn’t listen to coaches , was unaware what off season training was. There is no way the Hall that existed last year exists in a universe where oilers didn’t trade him.
Trading Hall was 100% the choice , not talking to more than 3 teams and settling for Larson without anything else coming our way was a bad decision no debate.

100% true.

He only started to have an off-season routine when he was traded. Furthermore he only began listening to the advice of others when he was traded as well. If he would have had a better attitude in Edmonton they would never have traded him. They did not have a choice.

I can not imagine how much he drove his coaches and teammates crazy.

Chiarelli handled the trade badly, not just for what he received, but also for how he backed himself so far into a corner that it was inevitable he would not get a good return.

Bouchard named OHL's top defencemen.

I guess that's promising.

The process continues for Nicholson, the list is down to 3 or 4 at this point. Hunter and McCrimmon likely still in the mix, as is Sean Burke. Burke is an interesting option, known to be extremely well prepared and very thorough. Dark horse candidate we don’t hear a lot about.

Welp.

Holland gets a chance to prove he can build a winner in the cap era.

Will be interesting to see how he fares when loyalty isn't a variable.

Should be interesting.

There's just so many freaking good teams now though you almost flip a coin who's in and out of playoffs.

Apparently Holland is given full autonomy if he takes GM job in Edmonton. So he can do whatever he pleases. Should be interesting.
