i would appreciate if you didnt strawman in every post ^_^

you cant justify funding science in general, i wasnt talking about "exploring space", or "getting out of caves", or "living more than 30 years", the same as you dont justify buying a shitload of caviar and oysters every day because "a man has to eat, right?" i was talking about this specific thing not being worth this specific amount of money spent <_< spending 10 bil on this shit in this time is like paying 10k on upgrading your cellphone camera while you cant afford the rent for the month

"Spending on this shit in this time" - You are such a hypocrite. Wow.

Why on earth should the 10 billion investement for the telescope not be worth it? Who are you to say its shit?

Scientific progress in the exploration of the universe is one of the most important things we could ever invest money in, thats for sure.

World hunger isnt solved by 10 billion dollars, but it would be solved by actually using all the food we have instead of throwing away 50% of it.

Funding science is funding science. Its not "instead" of anything. Posts like this one are beyond stupid.

Also: If you really think 10 billion is a lot, you should into things a bit.
Its nothing. Scientific funding is close to non-existent compared to almost anything else.

I don't think he is saying space exploration isn't important. He is just saying that there are other more pressing matters.

Also you can't say it's "one of the most important things we could ever invest in". Different people prioritize different things. Maybe he thinks solving world hunger is more important.

this is pretty much what i meant yes  ! we are in the middle of a global inflation and imminent collapse, so we are having trouble even with this planet  so i couldnt really care less about spending 10 billion on some new piece of tech that will give us marginally better pics, and will probably be replaced in a few years by a 100 billion piece of tech

basically, if people are struggling due to inflation that was literally created out of thin air due to intentionally horrible political choices, i do consider those more pressing matters. and he can buy his telescope after  !

Its not a contest between a telescope and human lives, thats misunderstanding on a fundamental level.

The western world spends A LOT more money for saving lives and fighting world hunger than it does for science. Be aware of this.
Also, money isnt edible anyways.

Hunger is not primarily solved by money.

Saving lesser fortunate from starving needs heart and iron will to work towards this goal - and a lot of people do exactly that.
A lot of people give all they have to give those people perspective, trust me.

Dont confuse science funding with something that happens INSTEAD of the the try to save the world from starving. It has nothing to do with it.

Those 10 billion wouldnt go anywhere else instead. You see, money isnt real. Its just a number, its not. like all of it exists in the form of metal and paper. States throw amounts of money in all their departments without actually having it. Its a travesty.

And every amount short of hundreds of billion dollars/euros or more is nothing anyways. No need to talk about it as long as it serves a purpose.

i have never mentioned world hunger a single time, you did that

i said that in the middle of a financial crisis, you arent supposed to spend money on relatively useless things (and for that amount of money yes its useless). actually fun fact, politicians spend the most money on worthless shit during the biggest crises

and yeah the money doesnt actually exist and it will end very badly at some point, but even fictive money burdens the system and people are up to their necks in shit after the manufactured corona/ukraine/whatever is next crisis. basically those 10 bil printed out of nothing will further increase the inflation by a small part of a % and its imo not a trade we need right now  basically you cant say that money doesnt exist because that would mean you could spend 23424324324 bil in the same fashion. and i might be cheap but i wouldnt pay more than 1/1000~1/100 of the money they spent, and if they dont like it, well i guess just put the whole project on hold indefinitely

SCIENCE

Dumbest thread ever... sorrry

Science is THE most important thing humanity can invest in. You dont seem to complain when you have reception in the middle of nowhere! Even writing this is only possible because of science.

Did you ever think for a moment that we could solve world hunger by reducing the amount of money countries spend to literally kill each other? For example US spends more in military than the next 7 nations combined.

reducing the amount of military spending requires certain levels of mutual trust, which humans as a species will never have. it could work in theory if you have high intelligence, high trust societies that are genetically similar to each other. for example you can expect sweden and denmark to have such a mutual agreement even though they on paper dont like each other, but it would be nearly impossible to implement almost anywhere in the world with the exception of nordic countries (and now not even there due to genetically different immigrants with a whole standard deviation lower average iq) and some east asian countries (although due to higher social anxiety than whites, those are prone to risking freedom for security and tend to end up with commie regimes that end in lowering trust). and even if it could work, nations with no external threat simply collapse from the inside and will elect idiots like turdeau who will spend everything on vacations and private jets

basically you can mind your business all you want, but if you are defenseless, someone else might choose not to let you :(

what i hate the most about US military spending isnt the amount spent, but the relative inefficiency of it. 95% of it goes who knows where and out of the remaining 5%, a big part is spent of bullshit. so the same situation as the telescope, not worth the money spent

No no and nope. I will ignore your comment about race and iq... :(

US spends 750 BILLION dollars per year in militaryand you complain about a telescope that will help us further understand our universe we live in. The same universe that we literally are made of.

We can only learn new things if we move further.

Thx! At least someone else instead of myself isnt a clueless, clownish hypocrite in here.

This thread just screams "no idea whats going on" more than any other thread I have read in a long time.

Jesus.....you are truly clueless. You have absolutely no idea about the bigger picture. If everyone would be like you, humanity would be doomed for sure...
