I'm Tanev's biggest fan but there's no doubt that Schmidt is an upgrade, easily worth the 1.5 or so million extra (not to mention he's less of an injury risk going forward).

When you can get a (arguably) #2 for a freaking 3rd round pick, you take it and run.

He's LH but plays RD, so we're fine on that front.

That said, without Toffoli and not much cap space left, we'll be relying on Virtanen on Gaudette to break out, which probably isn't very realistic.

Which means we're probably back to waiting out this year and hopefully clearing some cap next off-season.

i think next season heavily depends on how Demko and Holtby turns out, if they can perform anywhere close to Markstrom, or even slightly i think the team will be good enough to make wild card again. Losing Toffoli is a huge blow, he fit in perfectly but he essentially replaced boeser when he was out with an injury. I think they only played like 5 or so games together, and it felt like Boeser was ineffective than usual because Toffoli took his spot on the 1st line. However, if boeser can stay healthy i think the team upfront will still be okay, especially if leivo coems back and he really is 100% that's another 30-40pt player. The biggest difference is the backend, having TWO players in Hughes and Schmidt to easily bring the puck out their zone and make passes to players up front and getting rid of the trash dump and chase play is a big win. So yeah, as long as Holtby isn't playing like the past couple years and demko plays like in spring instead of his 3 godlike perf in playoffs, then we're probably regressing like hell lol

Feeling a lot more optimistic aftering seeing those advanced stats.

Still stings to lose a slough of players though.

Showing restraint will pay off in the end I think though.

Wild card spot would be good enough for me. Even though the team has regressed the playoff experience is much needed, even if it is just to lose in the 1st round.

On Saturday there were a lot of Schmidt rumours flying around and Canucks pounced on it pretty quick and made it clear they were willing to take on the salary. I think Canucks valued as a player whereas other teams viewed him as a vehicle to get something else

Friedman: I think the Canucks have a plan but I don’t think they articulated it very well. I think sometimes they’re so concerned about leaks that it can clamp down on the process. I think Schmidt deal was done on Saturday night.

Big if truee, kinda makes sense. Probably told Vegas, hey we want Nate if u guys sign pangelo and need to move someone out kthxbye.

So reports say that Benning is still looking for a dman.. If not cernak I'm hoping for weegar. He's apparently the odd man out in Florida. His defensive stats are elite, and under rated so he won't cost much. RHD too.

If it's Hamonic or Vatanen, I rather he just let the prospects play

Weegar's name has been thrown around a lot. Given his age and cap hit I really doubt he'd come cheap.

so apparently Benning offered a 1st, 2nd, Sutter and Virtanen for OEL

in hindsight it would've been an awful trade. still can't retain any of the UFAs, no room for Schmidt and essentially no assets to trade left. supports the theory that Jimbo fell into a pot of gold.

if that's true, the yotes owner&GM really fucked up lol
obviously value wise it's not great, but they'd be saving ton of money which was their main intention and getting 1,2,Virtanen out of it. Sutter's contract is gone next year and it's not much of a cap dumb compared to eriksson.
Good thing OEL saved the day with his deadline.

where's the rumor from? cuz from what i've heard it was a pick, prospect, roster player, cap dump player.

2nd, lind, virtanen, sutter/eriksson they agreed to it except for the prospect, they wanted either hog/pod or demko.
