"White" has always been understood more as an ethnicity than a race. Italians and Irish, for example, weren't considered white for most of modern history. Our current language on the topic is based on distillation of complex ideas into something inadequate and overly-simplistic.
Jews weren't white enough to not be tossed into gas ovens by the millions.
Being white isn't a ticket out of the oven. White people oppress white people all the time.
The white people in the poor neighborhoods aren't oppressing the black people and then moving and next door to them.
