And she lost.

I don't see anyone who can take up the mantle, but we'll see.

The party was decidedly not united behind JEB! in 2016. I'm talking about Hillary Clinton in 2016 levels of "clearing the field before the primary officially kicks off".

I mean 2008, 2012, and 2016 sorry. Jeb! was definitely going to be the designated loser until Trump declared his candidacy. You are right the GOP establishment underestimated Trump (and their own likability), which is why they are the stupid part of the party.

the (D)s have plenty of young talent. no one for the (R)s. i don’t think Trump will run again in 2024, and all the ‘Trump-lite’ potential candidates won’t have the fire to win like he does/did. plus no one will inspire that level of turnout, unless President Trump decides to create a media conglomerate and effectively makes himself a ‘kingmaker’ for 2024 and 2028 (by then he will be 82 and likely will check out letting his progeny take the reins)

She was a uniquely awful candidate. She was the second most unpopular nominee in history, and the only reason she didnt "win" this category is Trump himself. On top of that, she ran a really bad campaign.

I'm not sure who can take up the mantle either, but I'm confident that the GOP can find someone who's a better candidate than Hillary was.

I share your concern about turnout and the lack of a heir apparent, but you also have to keep in mind that the Democratic nominee in 2024 will be either an 82-year old Biden zombie, or Kamala Harris who couldnt even gain traction with the primary electorate of her own party in 2019.

Either of them will be weak candidates and eminently beatable. This will not be an Obama-2012 situation where the GOP has zero margin for error and needs an outstanding candidate to defeat the incumbent.

AOC will be 35 in October 2024. Mayo Pete as VP on the ticket. Ticks all the boxes

Kamala is a crooked cop nobody on the left likes the cops, especially when they’re crooked (then no one likes them period)

But Kamala also ticks all the boxes, and unlike AOC, she has the support of corporate Democrats and the mainstream media. For example, do you seriously think Jeff Bezos will instruct his lapdogs at the Washington compost to write up AOC when he could instead have his dream candidate Kamala, who will happily incarcerate droves of black and brown people and enlist them for slave labor in his logistics centers?

Buttigieg might be a suitable running mate for Kamala though. He's a McKinsey alumni, so he has the right pedigree for this kind of ticket.

Don't forget to talk about how he handled the police force of South Bend when he was mayor.
https://www.nytimes.com/2019/08/30/us/politics/pete-buttigieg-south-bend-police.html
The TL;DR is that he allied himself with the police for political power and whenever it was pretty clear there was some cleanup that needed to happen, made sure to sweep it under the rug. Some real faux-pas in some cases, I could've told him it was a pretty bad idea for his future political career.

They really could be the "Punisher" Duo

I view AOC and her clique as a sort of foot in the door for a progressive voice in the US political arena. Unless they stay there for quite some time, I don't think their influence is going to be more than corporate democrats paying lip service everytime an election roll around. AOC wasn't even sure she'd seek reelection in 2020 because of how the democrats remind her that she's not like them.

I gotta be honest, being a house representative must be exhausting. It's 2-year terms, which essentially means you're in an election year half the time.

I think the progressive wing would be able to take over the party and throw out the corporate-friendly party establishment if the Dems lost an election in a landslide. It's just that this was never gonna happen against an opponent as flawed and polarizing as Trump.

If nothing drastic happens it'll probably be an organic transition when the current old guard can't run anymore because they're so close to death's door. I mean, ffs Fenstein is 87 and Pelosi is 80. It was time to retire like 20 years ago lmao.

I mean, you may be right. But if there's any chance of this being true, it would be at the start of a political career. Obviously a politician saying they didn't if they were going to run again when they've been in politics for 20 years is bullshit, but less so when it's just after your first term.
