We've got 220,000 Americans dead from a pandemic and mask wearing is a culture war issue.

We're a weird country filled with many dumb people.

Or it's because an unusually high share of Trump-leaning voters took the question as a test of their support for Trump rather than an objective, at-face-value question, so that their response is some sort of "partisan virtue signaling".
Or perhaps some respondents consider covid and everything that comes with it to be a temporary aberration that will go away soon, so that their response is influenced more strongly by how they felt back in January/February before things got awkward.

People are hopeful and usually see themselves better today than 1,2, 5 years ago. That's natural human sentiment. I know that's how I feel for the most part.
