Never understood why tyranny of the majority was considered worse than tyranny of the slightly smaller minority.

Because that’s not really how it works. You rarely see country people dictating how a large city is going to run its schools, taxes, etc. meanwhile city policies and ideas tend to dominate politics even in rural areas.

The square states in middle of America should have some protection from being ruled by coastal mega states. That’s why the US is a representative republic and not a true democracy.
