there's a narrative that impeachment might not be a losing strategy. early on it was a good idea just to tie trump up early in his presidency, but they did the math and saw it had zero chance to do anything and Mueller was a better approach. Middle of the presidency it wasn't a good idea because we were waiting on the Mueller outcome. Once mueller passed they've been looking for any impeachable offense. now that it's nearing the 2020 campaign they think, im sure, this will drag well past 2020 voting day even in the best case. in the mean time Trump is distracted from campaigning on his policy and is on the back foot.

so the idea comes down to can you beat Trump simply by brow beating his potential unethical behavior. they know the law books are not going to do them favors here. so the goal of impeachment proceedings isn't impeachment, its smearing to hamstring his campaign. i dont even think its the perjury trap approach, i think they're filing with no real hope for impeachment. it kinda explains why they're doing it and fully explains Pelosi's trepidation to this point. like a shake of hot sauce in a chilli, no one's sure if this ends in a tasty spoonful or inedibly spicy trash. but when your chilli tastes like shit already why not toss on some spice to cover the lack of flavor.

lastly, it should be noted that recently internal political pressure on Pelosi shifted to more external pressure. Charlemagne tha God named her Donkey of the Day, celebs were tweeting, etc. This is a slight shift from AOC doing a daily tweet at her.

edit: lastly lastly, the dem platform rollout via the debates has been met with scorn. gun grabbing, elimination of billionaires, medicare for all forced down throats, etc. they need to shift to win. they cant win on what they've brought forward (minus Biden).

She caved because the president pressured the Ukrainian president to investigate his political opponent. Had he not done so, she wouldn't have announced an impeachment inquiry.

I'm glad a whole political party has completely accepted that their leader is blatantly corrupt. Very healthy for democracy.
