Greta: "I want air travel to be massively restricted for the sake of the climate"
Greta: "Look, I'll set an example and come to the NY summit without flying"

Me: "Well, not everyone can be friends with a Monegasque prince and borrow his $2m yacht."
Me: " Also, her and her father booking a round trip to NY would have caused less air traffic than the little stunt with the yacht where a crew of 6 had to fly to NY to fetch the yacht and bring it back to Monaco. Therefore, this whole little stunt was grandstanding, ineffectual and peak hypocrisy."

Crossbones: "sounds like you're jealous"

She could travel by rickshaw and you would still criticize it lol.

why are you denying her agency? what do you base that on? is she too young to have genuinely held beliefs?

Denying agency is what responsible parents do every day.

It's funny that a reply from me(a center-right person) which I assume you mostly agree with is turned into a debate topic. This is why you don't have any friends on PaRD.

Symbolism has it's place. And I've always thought it was incredibly weak when right-wingers attack climate activists for not abandoning the current system in place. Kind of similar to people telling Warren Buffet to write a check to the treasury if he wants to pay more in taxes... it just completely misses the point.

That said, children shouldn't be used as political props.

kind of sad you think that way. over here, it's considered good parenting to support your children's passions and convictions if they are reasonable and healthy. again, portraying her as political pawn (for who? big solar? the evil, bird killing, noise cancer giving 'wind mill' industry?), as clueless child exploited by nefarious powers to attack your precious fossil fuel industry, is pure propaganda that reveals a pretty bleak underlying world view...

it's funny that some people still act under the assumption i'm here to make friends, and would therefore ignore the parts of their posts i disagree with.
i agreed with the first part, and didn't feel the need to give you a virtual cookie for having a reasonable opinion on something, i'm not into the whole circlejerk business. i was under the assumption that you are one of the few people here who would not take disagreement on an issue so personal and inherently 'unfriendly'. apparently i'm mistaken about that.

But that's the whole point: she could NOT travel to New York from Europe by rickshaw or train or anything like that. The moment she was faced with the dilemma of either violating the behavioral guidelines she was relentlessly asking from others (dont fly, its bad for the climate) or not getting her message across (skipping the NY summit), she instead invoked her "rich, famous people's privilege" and took the $2m yacht from a Monegasque prince.

This whole little episode is a very telling example of the thing that her critics have been saying all along: she hasnt properly thought through the consequences of her demands. And that, in turn, shows why world leaders shouldnt listen too much to someone like her.

That's a good question, because it made no sense in English.

Again, more of your "let me burn any bridges that appear in the world". I can't believe a supporter of Bernie Sanders has this sort of attitude.

People under 18 who are useful to political interests get taken advantage of. Regardless of the merits, kids shouldn't be held up by politicians or activists as pawns in the game of politics. It's gross. They don't have the intelligence or independence to make these decisions for themselves... they can't consent to being used this way.
