Of course it is hypocrisy. The two situations are not entirely identical though:
In 2016, the voters had taken away the Senate from Obama in the previous midterms, so an argument can be made that not appointing a left-of-center judge to the Supreme Court is what voters had signed up for. By contrast, in the last election before the current vacancy (the 2018 midterms), voters had specifically increased the GOP Senate majority in spite of the unpopularity of the GOP president, so one can argue that voters have given Republicans a mandate to confirm conservative judges.

yes, an election in 2016 where there would be 100% chance of a new President. the incumbent was not up for re-election at the time. of course Republicans are stupid at messaging, and failed to include this. of course it wouldnt make a difference as the media would leave it out anyway.
there are no gymnastics of any sort required when it's two different scenarios.
I think attempts to justify this just allow for a really bad precedent to flourish unabated.
