trump knows he has 2 options.

1. be so harsh and continue presence in the region, forcing a deal on his terms. (highly unlikely and he knows it, but = nobel peace prize)

2. Force them out of the deal making process, trust the status quo is actually the safest route. maintain a tough appearance. (fairly easy)

all he's doing is what we've done for years, stack the deck around them while we wait for them to fall. the only new angle is to insult them while also praising them while this happens.

any deal without camps closed, the DMZ largely unmanned, and a seizing of nuclear materials mixed with an iran deal-esque promise to not develop would have been a failure. Trump knows this, and knows that deal is only going to happen directly before regime collapse, making the deal not worth it. it was a quagmire he used to boost his presidential look. it was never anything more and the nobel talks were retarded.

China probably gave NK either the tech or the missiles. I still have trouble believing that cute little mousey NK just decided to poke the bear that is the US, all on it's own.
Also, China was the last member to go along with the sanctions on NK.

the two thoughts, and whether they are both lying, aren't inherently connected. as to why NK would "poke" the US, that is your ignorance. Since the Korean War the US has been made into the imperialist boogeyman that the people are told want to wipe out the Korean bloodline. By poking and defying them, as a rather small scale dictator, Kim places himself on the world stage. It's like a girl picking a fight with the biggest baddest boy on the school yard, knowing they can't hit back as long as all she does it mock them. no one can attack based on the mockery of a little girl.

all in all you should really read a book. like any book on the history of the north korean issue. stop relying on dead relatives time in the war and a general tinfoil hat for anything and everything china. generally in the region pointing to china is a good idea. NK defies that rule. they've been poking the US, China, Japan, Sk, and Russia for 50 years. its has never stopped, ever, towards any of those "imperialist" nations. Russia being the last to be demonized after Kim Sun passed the crown to Kim Il, defying communist principals with a familial succession. all of this is chapter one stuff in any book, but you wont find it in a current events paper like Reuters, which is fine but focuses on the now. Historical context is of dire importance in predicting the Kim's behavior. odd that you so often lean on history in your rants but ignore it here. i can only conclude you're afraid to learn that china is only 99% the boogeyman u fear. sad.

2. We had to browbeat China to go along with the sanctions. They finally agreed to the oil sanction, but we busted ships still bring oil from China to NK.
3. China has been building like busy little beavers on some half man made island, thousands of miles from their shore.
4. China has repeated been after the blue dashed line (area of the South China Sea), against international law, for more than 80 years, that we know of.
5. All of a sudden out of the clear blue, NK decides to challenge a super power. A country the size of Ohio.

And you think everything is just as Kim Jong says, or at least attempts to get others to believe.

china's disagreeable with anything US driven, and sells oil to NK. that doesnt mean they control them. Predominately legit businesses sometimes do a bit of illegal shit on the side. China isn't even mostly legit, so it makes sense they funnel oil into NK. but that doesnt mean they control them, nor that they're "helping" them as an ally. they're fleecing them with inflated prices because they know NK has no where else to go. in this case it pisses off the US, the oil is used for domestic food production by-and-large, and they make cash.

China has a vested interest in maintaining some stability in NK. if the regime falls hundreds of thousands of non-chinese speaking refugees flood across the border. selling oil is cheaper than setting up permanent camps with military enforcement.

I like this move by Trump. Now North Korea understands that he's willing to walk away. Maybe this is bad for peace in the short run, but Kim Jong Un meeting with the POTUS is a big fucking deal for North Korea, and now it's not going to happen because of their inflammatory rhetoric.
