The adviser argued that public acknowledgment of that reality could help Biden assuage younger voters, especially on the left, who are unexcited by his candidacy and fear that his nomination would serve as an eight-year roadblock to the next generation of Democrats

Oh the tasty irony of the generation who uses "roadblocks" as a form of "protest" against "injustice".

imagine getting blocked on your way to do work, what a tragedy....

It's a pain. I was almost late one day because they blocked some highway exits during the last fire here.

highway blocking "protests" are by far the dumbest thing to come out of recent politics.

Kaep got more done when he was still sitting on the bench, pre-kneeling, than all of the highway blocking protests got combined. and thats saying something.

then again this is the same group (loosely applied ofc lol) that shouted Bernie off stage in 2016 lol.......

They tried to block the Dan Ryan one time during rush hour.

Needless to say, it didn't last long and a few protesters got smoked by traffic.

Side note - Has Hillary declared yet?

not yet, probably won’t be until late May or early June. After the primary.
But yes it’s still her—>! turn

like what? was excessive police violence not a thing back then? was everybody talking about it?

don't get me wrong, i'm not exactly a fan of highway blocking protests, but this very much sounds like the old 'sure, you have a right to protest - just not THAT way, which is inconvenient and uncomfortable for ME' story...

Blocking a road is a safety hazard.

Protesting peacefully is a normal and supported action by the vast majority. Blocking roads is just a dick move.

I was making a hyperbolic statement for effect. Kaep didnt get a LOT done via his kneeling protests, but he also got less traction when he was sitting on the bench head hung than when he took a knee instead.

But generally in hindsight the kneeling campaign brought attention to police behavior. it forced the NFL to donate to causes for more awareness. and Kaep's "know your rights" program has had some nominal success.

blocking highways gets literally nothing done. can we point to even a single thing it has directly caused? because we can say that Kaep's kneeling has had direct effects. we can argue the extent of those effects, but we'd all be in agreement at a causal level.

i dont know of a single causal effect of highway blocking protests. and the whole "inconvenient for ME" bit is a bit silly, they block off hundreds or thousands of vehicles and cause people to be late for work and police to show up. and they're incredibly dangerous for motorists and the protesters alike.

edit: also, you have the right to protest within certain bounds. blocking traffic is not a legal protest. so its a false equivalence to suggest that.

you might claim the same for literally tens of thousands of suffragette protests, and people used basically the same 'arguments' back then.

no single one of them had 'caused anything directly' (except from making the nation talk about and reflect upon it) - UNTIL public opinion changed to a degree that actual steps were taken. really, that's an incredibly weak argument, and again, i DO think highway blocking can be problematic sometimes.

in case you didn't notice, his kneeling triggered about the same responses: 'gets nothing done / hurts the wrong people / disrespectful / he can protest, but not THAT way...'

btw, there's a difference between hyperbole, exaggerating something for effect, and claiming something that is just demonstrably not true, not even to a much lesser degree.

what it comes down to is that people who simply have no sympathy for the CAUSE will always claim those things to delegitimise and attack the protesters - and they will exaggerate the 'downsides' and inconveniences that draw public attention in order to do so.
