You care on some level about being right, so when you get caught saying something monumentally stupid you have to try to convince yourself that you didn't say something stupid because you believe it, you said it because you don't care.

I do care about being right but my assessment of 'rightness' coming from people that i disagree with and hold a perpetually biased view means nothing. Nothing i said in the last few pages is untrue or 'monumentally stupid' just because the usual peanut gallery says so doesn't mean it's true.
