If you poll the part of the civilization that isn't aware of the details of the war, obviously they're going to choose whatever their own nation has spoonfed them.

To understand how bad it is outside of major cities in russia you have to be familiar with the culture, mostly non-educated people with little going for them, they have been zombified by the tv for the last 10 years
they actually believe theres a fascist regime in Kiev, that USA is planning to take over Russia and "do something horrible" to them. They are ready to whitewash anything, just as mothers of russian soldiers usually say "I was all for it and rooted for Putin/Russia/Glory, until my son disappeared, and nobody wants to talk or tell me whats going on, nor even pay out any compensation"

They believe that Ukraine was about to attack them, and these lies are what keeps putins regime in power, and these zombies turn the blind eye to all the corruption and 19th century living conditions they are in, too busy hating "west, ukraine, nato, japan"

And as economy stagnates, and those poor zombies get poorer - putin needs/will need more and more of these euphoric patriotic waves caused by war he artificially evokes.

I have no idea about the fascism in Ukraine, but one cannot deny that the country scores very high in world ranking of corruption and that Zelensky has pulled a few rather unethical moves to gain Western favourism

Corruption sure, thats what happens when country is very much a vassal Russian state for 20 odd years.

And what unethical moves has Zelensky pulled to gain Western favouritism? With amount of war crimes and atrocities committed by russians, all the work is done for him.
