I do have a better alternative - the societal codes and standards of today, which wouldn’t be around if people still took the christian bible seriously. Your premise that it was ‘the best thing for people of that time’ suggests that humanity dictates the behaviours of your god, not the other way around. In other words, your god is man-made

God can do anything

Except advance society in any tangible way. It would just be asking too much for god to do what a Kindergarten teacher does.

Society today bases its existence the protestant model for a spciety. Your “codes and standards” are a nonsubstantial thing.

There’s a few verses that keep me away.
The stoning rebellious children and similar stuff
Of course the slavery stuff
All the sexism, especially the one stating women should never teach men
The thing was clearly written by men

Plus there’s no credible evidence that Jesus even existed

There’s the idea that you have to believe over half the world is going to hell because they aren’t also Christian
^ ask yourself what if you were born to Hindu parents, you’d probably be Hindu as well. Or even born without religion in a religionless area, never even taught it, Hell for you.

Religion is purely on faith, and I’m not going to waste my time on something there’s no evidence of. If there’s an afterlife, that’s great, I hope there is, but I’m not going to worship based on the fear of going to hell if I don’t.

All this said, I think religion is useful in controlling the population and especially giving hope for those who need it. Myself I have something to live for every day and don’t need a book to teach me empathy.
