Since the christians over in the christian forum are so touchy about posting particular bible verses, I thought it'd be fun to have a thread in which to post some of the more morally-ambiguous passages found in the christian bible, and for our resident christians to explain how they reconcile these with their own sense of morality and decency. I'll start us off:

1 Peter 2:18 - Slaves, be subject to your masters with all reverence, not only to those who are good and equitable but also to those who are perverse.

Do the one about beating your slave and not being held accountable as long as you keep him alive a few days

The Bible teaches us to obey the laws of the land. There was slavery during the time period of the ‘New Testament’ & albeit it was obviously wrong, it was unfortunately the law. Peter was essentially saying they, the slaves or servants, should still be respectful of their masters.

If you wanted to apply this to modern times, we can take it to mean we should always be respectful to our employers, even if they’re unreasonable, or even dickheads.

The verse is about honoring whatever authorities God puts before us.

Well stated. Sadly I don't think the OP actually is interested in a response.

Those are some nice backflips.

Let's not play around the issue. The bible is totally fine with slavery. And no, it's not indentured servitude, it specifically says they are your property and you can beat them to death as long as they live till the next day.

How else are you supposed to treat peoples that you conquer in war? Slavery is better than killing them.

Stated with the assumption that conquering people through war is acceptable.

It isn't.

Would-be conquerors deserve to be executed and removed from the gene pool entirely. The peaceful deserve to be left alone. Perhaps one day the world will be managed by AI that can simply send a drone to the house of conservatives when they begin to express these amoral, antisocial ideas. Let's all hope it comes soon.

Just like the Bible says; the meek shall inherit the earth. I think God would be very supportive of this idea.

Rainbow drone executions of antisocial conservatives, then.
