It's no different from the fact that the players who lose in the 1st round of a tourney get paid less than the people that make the final. Gender has never had anything to do with the pay gap in tennis.

Men's soccer is the most popular sport in the world, soccer being a small time sport in the US. But they broke US viewership records, as if it's relevant. The total viewership of the women's world cup was less than that of the final game alone for men.
