Probably because he thought he could lie to everyone and really it took that long for his actions to sink into his thick stupid skull. Its good you're being nice to him, seems quite likely you'll go back to prison. Maybe you can share stories with him - I can see it - him telling stories about cracking heads, you telling stories about how your head got cracked - sounds like romantic reminiscing.
