So much this man.....
What irks me to no end, is that even after the monumental success we've seen with R rated films, studies remain fixed on this asinine belief that they're not a tangible recipe for box-office success. I understand that a single film may potentially have a lower return as it's available to a smaller portion of the public, but if the movie doesn't suck, that opens up possibilities for sequels + merchandising, which yields more in the long-term. These short-sighted bastards just care about the quick buck, so they'll churn out the same generic PG-13 movie that we've seen 10 dozen times already.
Look at what we've gotten with R rated comic/superhero films (Movie, Budget, Gross and I did round for a lot of these)
Logan / 100M / 620M
Watchmen / 120M / 185M
V for Vendetta / 50M / 130M
Deadpool / 60M / 780M
Deadpool 2 / 110M / 780M
Suicide Squad / 175M / 745M
Dredd / 45M / 41M
Kingsman / 81M / 415M
Kingsman 2 / 105M / 410M
Sin City / 40M / 160M
Outside two of these films (Watchment+Dredd), these movies were undeniable box-office hits, proving R rated films have the capability to be profitable. Let's be fair here, Watchmen was fucking phenomenal, but it came out 5-10 years too early. If they released that masterpiece today, it would have killed at the box-office. As someone who loves the graphic novel, they did an excellent job adapting it for the screen, and the casting (especially Comedian) was superb. Hard to say what went wrong with Dredd, I know lack of advertising was a big part of it, I honestly didn't know about that fucking movie until I saw it at Redbox. It was a surprisingly great film, Urban absolutely killed it, and it was a solid 7/10 or 7.5/10 action flick.
It's not surprising to me at all that Deadpool + Suicide, easily the weakest films in the list, were the most profitable. They're enjoyable for what they are, but hopefully we see more R rated films like Logan, and less trying way too hard shit like those.

The Boys is television gold. I think I mentioned this before, but after binging the entire first season in a day and a half, I went and bought the entire comic series and burnt through those in a couple days lol. I am soooo fucking hyped for S3.
Honestly, as much as people complain about movies/shows being ruined these days by PC culture or w/e else nonsense buzz word they're on, we're in the golden age of entertainment.
It's on a yearly, or bi-yearly at worst, that a new awe inspiring show pops up out of nowhere. Whether the Wire, GoT, True Detective, The Boys, Bojack Horseman, or on and on and on man, it's just so fucking good.
Even though I quoted your posts and point of view, my further comment is ONLY based on what "Comics" produced the current "TV shows & Movies" between your Era (1990+) and Mine (1966) which is currently 2021.
For myself and my time reading comics that were popular are:
The Phantom (Basically Black Panther became a spin off, or an off branch of DC vs Marvel comic war then)
Batman & Robin (DC)
Superman (DC)
... this doesn't include "Commandos" or "Maverick" and other Western comics or movies with John Wayne & TV series like Virginia etc.
Note: these are things I remember as a child, I also remember the original TV series of Superman (the first television series to feature Superman and began filming in 1951) BEFORE the movie released in 1978 with Christopher Reeves acting as Superman. (I was born in 66, but the TV show broadcast was from 51 here in NZ before the movie in 78)
Also, the comics I read in that time had NO humor, it was just action (well for my age, I may not have noticed humor of any kind).
As time passed, I read other comics from Marvel... liked the X Men, and again, no real humor in the comics and right up to some of the latest movies including the Gauntlet and Infinity Gems (comic version) where Wolverine (Logan) defeated (what's his name in the movies) and was entrusted with the power(s) of the Gauntlet and the infinity gems and create a World that he wanted, all he chose was, NO and that everything be returned to how it was before the crisis. and the gems / gauntlet scattered. (The movies now don't show those classic comic outcomes).
Now... you talk about R-Rated instead of PG13 Movies based on Comics.
Difference of opinion comes to mind, when I read comics in my Era, it was NOT humor, but it was written R-Rated even though there was no rating system, now, or your Era (1990's +) every thing is "Censored" by ethics / religion / history and other factors to try and make the Movie / TV show enjoyable to watch by a majority of ages and also still "instill" a modicum of the right values that we want to instill in our future generation of young people.
OKAY, that last paragraph comes off as BS and societal upbringing etc, personally the movies portrayed now, shit, I can go back to Cartoons/Anime of Dragon Ball ... total destruction without consequences of what is destroyed around them.
What is PG13 when a Movie shows the Destruction of CITIES and the populace even though they are Super Heroes like the Avengers or Superman?
Perception right? ... I am Superman and kill 4 Million people in Metropolis while protecting the Planet from an invasion of Skrulls ONLY attacking Metropolis?
Perception... just like internet websites rating movies for children aged under 13 like Hell Boy II in the Auction house where the fertility statue is pornographic because it shows boobs (oh come on, did you even notice it when watching the movie Hell Boy II? I didn't) ... yup, that is right, they look for everything that they deem to be inappropriate and RATE the show... etc, etc.
Anyway, when I watch a movie, TV show or anime, I watch it for the story line or action, not the fertility statue and boobs, or the knicker n boob shots or even if the hero decimates an entire city... story line &/or action.
tl;dr version = Rating system is based on a bunch of people that look for a reason to control what they believe is right even though they are wrong.
