so fifteen of the biggest and richest clubs in europe (real, barça, atléti, city, pool, chelski, arsenal, united, spurs, juve, inter, milan & three yet to be announced clubs) decided to found their own european league. in it, 20 teams (15 founders who won't need to qualify and 5 qualifiers) will compete in mid-week games each year.
i think this is an incredibly toxic plan, driven purely by greed and selfishness. it will significantly widen the financial chasm between the money elite and the regular clubs, and effectively destroy any domestic competition those teams have, and any semblance of financial fairness or vertical mobility - not that the current state of affairs wasn't already a two or three class system already...
i'm curious if those clubs would even be interested or able (in terms of scheduling but also pending potential official bans) to compete in UEFA's club competitions, and how their fans will react to it, seeing as this is clearly not an idea that arose from popular demand, but was birthed in executive offices.
to be fair, i'm not exactly a fan of UEFA in general, not of the current scope of the CL, let alone their expansion plans. i think it's in serious need of reform for sure. that said, on this issue it's not hard for me to pick a 'side'. this super league idea is just awful in almost every single regard imo...
