It doesn't really matter what the price of the short position is. If they can cover their position in 6 hours of volume then it's not going to drive the price up for days and weeks. In order for this to be a short squeeze then the short interest would have to be like five times more than what's being reported and I don't think that's likely.

I think the best explanation for this is a retail pump and people hopping on the bandwagon.

How does the price not matter the more it goes up = higher chance of margin call and forced to cover position = higher price action = more margin Calls which = squeeze

because even if every single short got margin called at the exact same time they would be covered in a few hours. You can't have a squeeze without enough shorts that it significantly drives the price.

AMC is a retail pump. That might turn into a small short squeeze later on, but the short squeeze isn't going to be nearly the same size as the retail pump.
