To specify, those "retail investors" who utilize recommended funds from major investors tend to have a fairly decent turnaround. Those who wish to "play" the market, as though they're some pro day-trader? Tend to do poorly. That's the historical record anyhow, and part of why 401K's tend to provide an outstanding return for retail investors, while straight stock investments as an overall from the "retail investor" crowd struggle to even break even.
