Is it more populist to criticize the elites who may not be critical enough of the disenfranchised people protesting, or to sympathize with the disenfranchised people protesting?
This is mostly a rhetorical question.
This is clearly an issue where left-wing and right-wing populists will come out on opposite ends of the spectrum.
Left-wing populists: the (economic and justice) system is obviously rotten to the core, set up to keep a racialized underclass down and protect the interests and the power of the rich.
Right-wing populists: the (media and political) system is obviously rotten to the core, deliberately stoking racial tension and animosity to protect the interests and the power of the rich.

They deserve it.
If there's a full acquittal, they will indeed deserve what's coming for them. Given the very unambiguous evidence, I'd be shocked if Chauvin wasnt convicted for at least lower-degree murder.
