I've always thought it was awkward phrasing to say I'm proud to be an American. I'm thankful to be an American. I acknowledge the greatness of our founding and the way we have operated through history(on the whole... obviously there are several bad moments). I did nothing to contribute to that, so pride is not really the appropriate word to use.

But to be honest I've been ashamed of our country since Trump got elected president. If someone asks me if we're a great country, I would say we have great power, and great wealth, but we're no longer a great country. We're severely flawed, and I'm not optimistic about our future.
