Democrats don't have a majority in the senate yet.
It would take a 67% vote from the senate to remove Trump from office and subsequently disqualify him from holding office again. It's extremely unlikely to happen. The first time Trump was impeached only 1 republican senator supported it. This time there is maybe 3 of them considering it publicly. It's not nearly enough. Delaying the trial wont change these numbers significantly either.

Except after the 20th they don't have to deal with the crybaby in person, I expect that once he's gone republicans will be more willing to make the right move.
