They're both old, and they're shaking a lot of hands. One or both could easily be taken out by the virus.

Yep. It would be unfortunate, but either of them having large issues is not outside of the realm of possibility.

It's unlikely, but not outside of the realm of possibility. Hell, Biden could have a health crisis, or just totally flounder in the debates and make a few giant gaffes. There's a lot of avenues to Bernie's nomination, albeit not likely avenues.

Bloomberg comes back if this happens

The man who had a heart attack in the last 6 months is banking on someone else having a health crisis?

Bernie has no path from here. Biden didn't crash and burn - that's what he was banking on

They both have access to incredible health care, so their expected mortality rate would probably be lower than the 8% case fatality figure for their age range (70-79) cited by the recent JAMA study, but agreed. It is indeed a legit risk for both of them given how many people they will interact with and how much they will be traveling over the new few months.

It's kind of morbidly funny in a way that Bernie's best chance at the nomination could be Biden dying from Coranavirus (or any other medical problem) rather than winning outright. Sanders was the percieved frontrunner just two weeks ago. Fivethirtyeight now gives Biden a greater than 99% chance of winning. In Vegas, Biden is a 1/10 favorite and Bernie now has 28/1 odds. It's not swinging back to Sanders.

Why do you all think that the party would just nominate Bernie if Biden has to drop out all of a sudden due to some health issue? Keep in mind how this primary went: despite having by far the largest name recognition/national profile and tons of institutional backing, Biden struggled a lot. He ran horrible campaigns in Iowa and New Hampshire and got horrible results. Bloomberg's entire run was predicated on the notion of Biden's weakness.

The party did not rally around Biden in the end because Biden convinced them, they did so because they couldnt find a better alternative and Sanders threatened to run away with the nomination on Super Tuesday if the rest of the field had remained divided.
The party establishment as well as a large majority of the primary voters weren't "yeah, Biden", they were "everyone but Sanders, so we gotta go with Biden it seems". Same story with the turnout patterns we saw in states like Virginia or Massachusetts, where there was a big surge in wealthy, pro-status-quo suburbs. This was not a pro-Biden surge, it was an anti-Sanders surge!

All of this anti-Sanders movement and sentiment would still remain even if Biden himself had to drop out of the race unexpectedly. There's no way the party would just rally behind Sanders. They would probably go with Bloomberg or Warren I would say.
