So, here it is. The work I had to do on the bike is finally done, and now the real work begins. I haven't done any cycling since I was 16, so it's going to be slow going to start, but it's going to be worth it in the end.

Decided to get into cycling since it's great for cardio, but I can also get a lot of fresh air while I'm at it and it's low impact on a post-surgery knee.

Stats:

Ht - 5'6"
Wt - 172lbs (estimating based on having not weighed myself in a few months, but that's what it was then)
BF% - too dang high
Diet - dirty, but getting clean

I take a daily multi, and taking Aleve when needed for the knee.

The bike:

Now, time for a ride.

Good luck.
I suggest adding some sort of weight training into your regimen however. Will help build a better physique, shred fat, and overall body recomp (that is if you’re eating correctly).

Thank you.

I've got some bodyweight stuff I do, also, as well as an extensive stretching routine to keep my flexibility up.

Been either cold, rainy, or both this week for the most part. A couple nice days in there, and I was able to get a 2.6mi and a 3.6mi ride in on those days.

Going to the bike shop tomorrow. Getting a bigger helmet since my current one doesn't quite fit right, and looking into a new seat. Wal-Mart products were affordable, but the lack of quality is really felt, especially in the seat.

you can put one of those rubbery cushions on your seat so your buttwhole can last >3.6miles.
They are not too pricy and I can tolerate 10-15k rides with the cushion, compared to 2km max in the past, where my buttwhole/gooch pain would make me wanna walk the bike.

I'll look into that.

Got the helmet the other day instead. I figure a proper fit for safety is more important than a comfy butt.

Guys at the shop were mentioning a chamois being a better solution than a new saddle. Which makes sense, given the built in sit-bone padding. I'll probably go that route over the next several weeks, but give my but a chance to adjust to the new seating position.

I've adjusted to some akward seats over a week period, so I think you'd be fine. Good work man!

Strong, though short, ride today.

24m3s, 4.86mi, Avg 12.1mph

First non-stop ride so far. Lots of hills, and a robin tried to dive bomb me, but the ride felt great.

Definitely getting a new saddle next time I'm at the shop, and getting gloves, too. Some extra padding for the hands on the bars will help. I found myself changing hand position frequently to regain comfort.
