Just read that the us tried to change to simple online tax forms like we have in australia and it was blocked by lobbyists on the grounds that h&r block would lose profits.

I have been using the same tax software company for years, and their product has done nothing but get better and better. I filed my taxes this year in under 30 minutes. In the past, it has taken multiple hours. I can't imagine the federal government would make their product better over time. If they really wanted to make tax filing simple, then they need to unfuck the tax code.

In australia tax generally takes 10-15 minutes unless you have a non typical tax setup, mine requires accountants but I still feel like forcing everyone to use trash tier tax hacks like h&r block is messed up.
