Nah, when he starts just randomly winning against the class A heroes.

Basically goes from "I can't move cuz poison and I'm weak" to "BUT NOW I'M STRONG AND BEATING ALL OF YOU! CUZ MAIN CHARACTER!"

I mean yeah, then Genos, Bang, etc. show up and shit goes sideways but it's just lazy writing for him to suddenly start winning just because.

doesn't he have features similar to metal bat where he gets stronger via fighting spirit?
