i've used avast, avg, and kaspersky over the last several years
not all at the same time but have tried different ones
kaspersky has been the least annoying one to deal with

American government agencies are barred from using Kaspersky due to it's ties to Russian intelligence. Also, Kaspersky has been known to target private computers of government officials for spying.

Generally, in 2019 you want to avoid running any programs that freely scan your entire computer. Anti-virus software is mostly a meme anyway since it won't always stop the user from installing malware. The best bet is to learn safe browsing practices and just upload any questionable executable files to VirusTotal before you run them. This will check the files aginst signatures from dozens of anti-virus software vendors.

Use builtin Windows Defender and run your web browser inside of a sandbox.
Antivirus is waste of system resources.

I'm a Sr. Sys. Admin at a fortune 500 and we use a combination of Windows built in AV along with INTUNE for monitoring. However, an AV will only do you as good as you let it. What I mean is, if you are the type who constantly turns off your firewall/AV/Protection to gain a few extra frames, or because it pops up too often or whatever, it will obviously be less effective. The key is to find a happy medium with configuration to not bother you incessantly while also offering you a comprehensive protection. No AV is perfect, just as no security system is perfect. The reason we use INTUNE/Windows Defender, is the speed at which it is updated and its simplicity with configuration.

Not free, I'm using Kaspersky Total Security since 2006 and works fine to me.
It's ~50€ a year to cover 3 devices.
People tend to idolize fancy and expensive Apple products as virus-safe (which are not) but can't invest few bucks into a decent antivirus.

Basic Win 10 security it's a pretty solid and free alternative tho.

I don't use anti virus programs. I just make sure my autostart is Clean :)
Anti-Virus is just overrated and ruins your pc.

Good viruses are usually undetected by AV.

a good way to stay away from viruses is stop doing porn and do the real thing instead
