Last I checked the only two processor companies got their start and did all their research in California for like 20 years.
The funny thing is a lot of people will say things like what you just did without realizing California is easily the most important state in the Union.
I'd say that New York can rival California in that regard. NYC is the center of the financial world, and one of the major cultural and intellectual hubs of the entire world.
But California is more well-rounded, with more industry, agriculture and several centers of population. If we ranked the states by how well they could cope as a sovereign country after leaving the union, California would top the list by a big margin, probably followed by Texas and then New York.
Other than that, I agree with thatalex: the main selling point of splitting california up is to tilt the power balance in the senate in the democrats favor.
